    Abu Dhabi makes it rain

I don't care what the weather man says when the weatherman says it's raining, you'll never hear me complaining - especially when it is a man made storm! That's right, Abu Dhabi has been experimenting with playing God to the weather, making it rain:

"As part of a secret program to control the weather in the Middle East, scientists working for the United Arab Emirates government artificially created rain where rain is generally nowhere to be found. The $11 million project, which began in July, put steel lampshade-looking ionizers in the desert to produce charged particles. The negatively charged ions rose with the hot air, attracting dust. Moisture then condensed around the dust and eventually produced a rain cloud. A bunch of rain clouds. On the 52 days it rained in the region throughout July and August, forecasters did not predict rain once."

    Astonishing.

But apparently it's not so new. Abu Dhabi has been at it for a number of years. According to an article from ITP, back in 2008:

"Many UAE motorists making their way home on Tuesday would have put the dark skies and light rain down to just a freak occurrence, but in fact the unseasonably bad weather could have been manmade as scientists were carrying out tests to induce artificial rain. The Meteorological Department at the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) used aircraft to sprinkle cloud seeding salts in moist clouds heading towards Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al Ain, reported state news agency Wam."

What that says is that this is of strategic importance to the leadership. The fact that the UAE is so hot, coupled with global warming must play on what is going to happen in the future. Who knows why? But what has been accomplished is amazing - and could have further applications in the future. Think drought plagued countries in Africa, for example. This may be some time off, but while Abu Dhabi experiments with the man made rain shower, we must ask, what else are they experimenting with. The mind boggles.
